Working for the Faculty
The mission of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good.
Academic freedom is a value that faculty hold dear-not just because it enables their own intellectual inquiries, but also because it sets the ground rules for the whole enterprise of higher education.
The AAUP strengthens the voice of faculty seeking to protect academic freedom by:
- Taking a firm stand were the rights of faculty are overridden in the confusion and zeal surrounding our nation’s efforts to combat terrorism.
- Helping faculty with the tough questions involved in dealing with requests for information about students that was once considered private.
- Opposing legislative interference in academic matters, such as the readings faculty assign to students.
- Articulating policies on research ethics, part-time and non-tenure-track appointments, academic work and family responsibilities, and the faculty role in reform of intercollegiate athletics.
